Getting started

Residual adds a Risks page to your Jira Cloud projects. This page walks you through installation, setup by the project admin and your first risk.

Residual is installed on your Atlassian site from the Atlassian Marketplace, in the same way as any other app. Atlassian’s standard install process applies: the app is installed by a person who is allowed to install apps on your site, or requested from them.

Installing Residual does not change your Jira configuration. It creates no work item types, no custom fields and no permission schemes.

After installation, each Jira project shows a Risks page in its project navigation.

The project admin opens Risks. The register for the project is created on first open with the default risk model. Everything that follows is done by the project admin inside the project; no Jira administrator is needed.

Who can view, edit and configure the register follows your existing Jira project permissions. See Permissions.

  1. On the Risks page, select Create risk.
  2. Enter a title, for example Main component delivered late by supplier, a category and optionally a description, a review date and an asset reference.
  3. Save. The risk appears in the table with the level Unrated.

Open the risk to see the detail panel with the tabs Assessment, Treatments and History.

  1. In Assessment, rate the inherent risk: probability and impact before any treatment. Write the rationale, for example Single source for the main component, supplier reported two late deliveries in the last twelve months, no buffer in the schedule. The rationale is required.
  2. Rate the residual risk: probability and impact after treatment, with its own rationale.

Each assessment stores the rating, the rationale, the model version, the person and the time. The heatmap and the table update immediately.

In Treatments, add the measures that reduce the risk, with owner, due date and status. A treatment can only be marked Effective when evidence is attached. See Treatments and evidence.

  • Switch the heatmap between inherent and residual.
  • Look at the History tab to see every change with person, old and new value. See Audit trail.
  • Export the register as PDF or CSV. See Export.
